it is so sad that man made suffering continues like society can not grow to be progressive or civilized. what is taking place in syria today is slaughter of innocent civilians caught up in an ugly revolution ousting a tyrant dictator.
this work of mine dates to when the nazi regime aligned with then a spanish dictator wanted to test a new jet plane and its capabilities in a bombing raid, at random a farming town in the basque region of spain named guernica was chosen to be the testing grounds.
without notice the towns people were bombed and hacked to pieces and the world sat silent in the face of tyranny, whereas Picasso who a proud spaniard himself outraged, expressed his nations anger and sorrow by painting this large 27 foot long canvas countless times until he felt that it truly captured his emotions and profoundly changed the worlds view with his art. the painting went on to be exhibited at the world fair in 1939 as WWII was heating up, it drew attention yet the world had other concerns and life then went on to witness a massacre of grand proportions that went on for five years plus. since then the artwork has been on loan and is on display for long term at the united nations headquarters in new york.
war is nothing new and sadly there will always be casualties at any rate, what needs to change if not war itself is society's oblivious nature. case in point, is the shameful act the proud champion of freedom and human rights the best nation on this wonderful planet our united states of America pressured the UNations at the time of the onset of war on Iraq " shock n awe" to drape this magnificant painting of Picasso while the campaign to convince the world that war was necessary and the only method to the maddness
in short this painting of mine is brief in being five feet wide, it hangs over our dinning table not that it serves as an appetizer. we pray for an end to human suffering be it from disease or acts of nature or misfortune, and as well to lessen the wrath of humans on one another.
it does remind us and guests that long before guernica, and long after there was armenia, auchwitz, cambodia, vietnam, beirut, bosnia, el salvador, 911, darfur, gaza and now syria...
my apologies for provoking thought, art alone ought to do that without use of words.
